Artist's Statement

Art has been the ambition of my life as far back as I can remember. When it came to choose a career I could easily have gone into languages or mathematics but I chose
Art against my parents’ advice.

Thus began the long and exciting journey from the little village of Xewkija, Gozo ,
to the Art School in Valletta Malta , on to the Ruskin School of Fine Art in Oxford ,
back to Malta, then again to the Regent Street Poytechnic in London and now in Canada.

I find Art to be all consuming. It is an endless challenge with ever expanding horizons .

When students ask my advice whether to pursue an Art career I always tell them :
“Unless you have an irresistible urge to do it, keep it as a hobby .”

When I am gardening , which I like a lot , I feel guilty because I feel I am neglecting my
Art work . Friends tell me gardening is another form of Art , which in a way it is .

The difference is that if you spend two hours working in the garden you have something to show for it , whereas in Art you may work for two days and end up with nothing.

What is very frustrating is when sometimes you finish a work and you are quite pleased with it , then a week or so later, you find that it isn’t as good as you first thought.

That is why many artists end up destroying their work , something which I have done myself.

However there are times when concept and execution come together and you achieve something worthwhile. This is a reward that can only be experienced rather than explained . It is this that keeps an artist going.
